Gotta admit...Logan's not hard to look at.

Well, I said I'd catch up. I'm trying. It is now 1:05 in the morning, I have just put Logan down for the night (at least the next three hours, I hope), and I can't sleep. Lovely. But, you didn't come to this site to listen to me whine, did you? Let's say Hi to Logan.

Ah, that's better. Power to the people! Well, that's probably not what Logan is thinking, but the fist action does work. Maybe he meant Power to really pale babies. God help us if he is as pasty white as his pops. Hopefully, he gets is Ma's tone.

This has been quite an interesting time for Diane and I. I can't say its been easy. Far from it. Having Logan in our lives has waylaid us to an extent that we never imagined possible. I wish I could say I've enjoyed him, but I can't. What I can say is that every day gets a little better, as we get to know him and his personality emerges. I can't wait for that.

Ok, so a few weeks ago, Grandma Jan came to town to see her new great grandson. Logan was very pleased to see her.

Since Grandma Jan is going to be moving back to Colorado, from dreary Cleveland, OH, Logan expects to be spoiled rotten and treated like a little prince. Also on the agenda is plenty of over-nighters over at Grandma Jan's place, where there will be yummy things to eat, lots of cartoons to watch and general mayhem to be wrought. However, Logan will need to be walking and talking to really take advantage. Hurry up and grow, boy. Life is so much more than a good bottle of formula and a satisfying bowel movement. In fact, here's a thought...try sleeping through the night. You wouldn't believe how good that feels.

Over at Ma's house, Logan pigged out. See, when you go over to Gramma Barb's house, you take every opportunity to eat. Since Gramma makes a killer bottle of formula (it has cloves in it), he took advantage. As you can see, Logan is quite a multi-tasker. Not only is he eating, but he is staring intently. How did the boy get so smart? He can eat and stare at the same time! This does his pops proud. I guess the real question is what is he staring at? He's probably staring at his Uncle Jesse's sizable gut. That is an eyeful, that's for sure. Logan and uncle Jesse are in a competition to see who has the roundest gut. The jury is still out, but Logan's got a bit of work to do to catch up. I'll be taking wagers on it, if you're interested.

Well, well, well...what is this? Eating again? This time, Logan has procured grandpappy phil to hold the bottle. At this point, we haven't left gramma barb's house yet, so as you can see, Logan has no compunction about taking advantage of the services and resources available at gramma and grandpappy's place. He's like a food sociopath. Actually, if you think about it, he's probably just a plain sociopath. Logan doesn't care if you're tired, hungry, cold, sick, out of shape, gassy, bored, hot, injured, or stressed. All he cares about is that you feed him, make sure his pacifier stays in his mouth, keep a blanket on him and keep a clean diaper on him. To @#$%^& with your needs. You'll get over it.

Diane and I have been very blessed to have some friends help us out. Here, Annie has taken charge and Logan is clearly ok with this. He's an attention black hole, if you haven't noticed. Not only that, but anyone who will pat his back and hold him for a few hours will get treated well at 3 in the AM (it'll only take 40 minutes to get him to sleep instead of the hour and a half). See, he's not unreasonable. As long as you serve him with all your heart, he'll only fuss when he needs to. This is not an attitude Diane and I are trying to foster, but at this point, he's not very reasonable.

Aaaahhhhhhh............now momma really knows how to take care of Logan. What could be more fun than siting out on your bench in the front of your house on a warm spring evening rocking Logan to sleep? See? You can't think of anything. That's because there isn't anything more fun than that. In fact, if you really want to up the fun meter, make sure his pacifier stays in his mouth. We, at the Day household know how to have fun. Logan as taught us well.

Who wants to clean the yard of Rufus doo? Logan, you do??? Great! Thank you for volunteering. You're a real sport. Its good to see you start taking responsibility around this house.

Actually, the question is "Who's constipated?" Jeez Louise. You know, there aren't many things more stressful than a constipated baby. We took Logi (that's pronounced Low-gee...my new nickname for the boy) to the pediatrician because he was dealing with constipation. We found out that as long has his stool was at least the consistency of dryish peanut butter that we had nothing to worry about because it is normal for babies. We should worry if it was hard and milk-duddy. I wonder if our pediatrician has even held a baby. We had some friends (Tom, Kara, Drew, Kaycee) tell us to just shove a suppository up his little cherrio and to switch his formula to a lactose free base, and presto, the baby is cured. We owe them a huge debt of gratitude, as they have given us precious hours of sleep.

You know what is really sad about the above story? Every parent has, at some point in their child's life, thought that the topic of stool consistency is very interesting. Diane and I were over at Jesse and Andrea's house the other day, talking about it, and you'd think we were discussing the latest issue of the Economist Magazine's lead story. We're not really cool any more. To all you single folks reading this, you just wait. You'll be a dorky parent too (I can't really say my parents are dorks though. Well, dad is, but for different reasons).

Get your grove on! From what I understand, mommy was playing a groovy funk-a-by and Logan was really "throwing down". You know, I hope he has the ability to groove. If he does, he didn't get it from me. Diane can really cut a rug. She tried to get me to cut the rug with her a few times. That was too much fun for me, so I had to stop because you can hurt yourself if you have too much fun. But, if Logan has the moves, great. What kills me in this pic is the hat. It almost looks like he's wearing panty hose (Actually, wouldn't it be hilarious if he were wearing one of those nylon caps that suffocate your head?). Maybe not panty hose...maybe an elf hat. Not an elf hat...a gnome hat. Elves aren't little midgets that wear pointy hats. If you need to see what an elf looks like, watch the Lord of the Rings movies. Why are we even talking about this? Did you see the game last night???

Man, I'm tired. I think I'll sleep in my scoliosis position. That way, I'll wake up with a crooked back, a really stiff neck and drool on my cheek.

All I can say is "enjoy your flexibility, son". At some point, you'll find that you'll get a turtlehead just trying to tie your shoe. Either that or you'll just pass out due to lack of oxygen.

BRAAAAAAAAPPPPP!!!!!!! Man! That was a burp. Too bad we couldn't put that one on the wall. Of course mommy and pops are very proud of Logi and his burpage. A good burp means at least an extra hour of sleep. There are three things in this life that you want and need to hear. They are:
1. I love you
2. BRAAAAAAAAPPPPP!
3. (TBD)

Diane doesn't exactly view Logan's BRAAAAAAAPPPP! the same as my BRAAAAAAAPPPP!. For some reason, mine are gross and his aren't. No worries. I'll make mine come out silently on the other end. Problem solved. Keep at it, Logan!

Well, Logan wants you to know that he has enjoyed visiting with you. If you can't stick around, but would still like to make Logi happy, send a check for $1000 to his PO Box.

I had planned on putting some pics of Cousin Abbie's birthday party on this as well, but my camera died. I'll have to have Auntie Sandra send me some pics, as the event was quite memorable!

Good golly, I'm tired. Its now 2:30 AM. Logan should be waking up soon for his nightly feeding, so it's not so bad. Heck, if I were in his position, I'd wake up too. There's nothing like a yummy bottle of formula to satisfy an empty tummy. Do restaurants know about this stuff????

Alright, that's about it.

A day in the life of Logan

Its been a while since I've been able to post about my son. Needless to say, things have been really busy, tiring, stressful and so on. I could say time has flown by, but it hasn't. It has been acting constipated, much like Logan (well, he was. A well placed suppository took care of that in a jiffy. Pretty gross.). I have a boatload to say and write about, but as it happens, I'm really tired as we speak. So, I am just going to post a series of pictures diane and I took will hanging out in the nursery with Logan.

Logan just figured out how much he's going to have to pay in taxes, once he gets a job. He wasn't thrilled with the idea, and in fact, pooed his di-di when he first heard. Grandpa told him not to worry and that with some good financial planning, he could minimize his losses. Logan still wasn't happy, but he both resigned himself to it and also resolved to make it work, as you can see. He also wants to take care of mom just as well as she is taking care of him.

At this point, Logan and Pops are having a conversation about trading stocks. Here is an exerpt:

Logan: I think Apple is a good stock to buy, even at these price levels, but it makes it less attractive because it is so expensive.

Pops: But the price doesn't matter. If you bought 50 shares at $100 or 100 shares at $50, you'll still make the same regardless of how much it moves.

Logan: That's a good point, but in the stock business, its not just about stock price...its about quantity as well. If I can buy a stock that'll have the same percentage movement as Apple, but pay $20 instead of $100, why not do that?

(We'll spare you the rest of the conversation. He's a smart boy, like his mom.)

Feel bad for Logan...he's just seen his first muffin topper and is both grossed out and mystified as to why any one would appear in public like that. I mean, come on!!! have some dignity! Do a few sit ups before you shove yourself into that outfit, lady! Just because your clothes are size 6 doesn't mean you are. Geez. Ick.

Editor's note - for those of you who aren't privy to the term "muffin topper", a "muffin topper" is a person (generally a woman) who wears clothes that are much too tight for their bodies, thus causing their gut and side rolls to pooch out between the bottom of the shirt and the top of the skirt or pants. Its very unsightly.

I believe this is what we refer to as a pizza dream. In Logan's case, we see that not only is he dreaming about pizza, but he has developed quite a pizza string.

Logan and mom also had an interesting conversation about eating the right formula:

Mom: So, you see Logan, babies are very specialized and need the right formula. Would you put regular gas in a Mazarati? Of course not.

Logan: Well, I really like the soy based formula, but it sure bottled me up. I felt like I was having a baby every time I messed my diaper.

Mom. Yeah, don't go that far. You couldn't possibly relate. In any case, the soy stuff just didn't do it for you. I think you'd rather have a tummy ache than being constipated, right?

Logan: Absolutely, but I don't have to like it.

(it goes on...e-mail for more on the conversation...)

Here, Logan is in a state of tranquility. He has eating like a pig, burped like a man, took a huge man-dump, gotten a clean diaper, and is now sitting very contented in mom's lap. Could life get any better? Why, yes it could! We could do this 8 times a day for 3 months.

Ok, that's about it for now. Logan will check in again, as time permits. Good night, all.

Bottlelajara and the Dijery-doo Dorks

Logan has had a very exciting week. Aside from the normal "mudslide in the diaper" bit and "fussing because it's 3 in the morning" routine, Mt. Logan got to spend his first weekend and gramma and grampa's house in Boulder (of course he didn't realize it was more for mom and pop's benefit than anything else). Needless to say, those days were action packed. Let's see Logan in action:

Whoops. I guess this is more exciting for us. If he sleeps, we sleep. God bless his sweet little heart.

Here we are at Gramma Barb's house. Prince Logan is in his favorite position: balled up in someone's arms. Can you blame him? I have found lately that he sleeps remarkably well if he's held. Essentially, he's addicted to being held. Unbelievable. He's only 4 weeks old and already he's developing character flaws. Somebody should talk to the boy. This isn't good for anyone desiring sleep, but it gives us another option in trying to get him to sleep. The first option (going for a ride in the car at 2 AM) gets old. Holding him isn't so bad either. He is cute and he makes relatively endearing little noises. Camille did that quite a bit when she was Logan's age. I call it squacking.

In any case, at Gramma Barb's house, the Logan love-fest continued ad-nauseum. Here we have Auntie Andrea perpetuating his "holding" addiction.
Does he seriously think he can get away with this?

Apparently so. I give up. I suppose I'll just hold him a bit myself.

In the previous post, we saw Logan in the throws of an overwhelming "milk buzz". So, not only is he addicted to being held, he's developed quite a drinking problem, as you can see above. Note the empty bottle on the table and how full he looks. I can empathize with Logan. Diane and I visit her family down in Guadalajara, Mexico, once a year if we can. In Guadalajara, we spend 97% of the time eating or talking. In my case, because I don't speak spanish, I am forced to eat. The routine there is to get up, eat pre-breakfast breakfast, wait an hour, eat breakfast, wait an hour, eat 4 leftover tamales and 2 mugs of atole from the night before, wait an hour, eat the first 5 course meal of the day, wait an hour and a half, eat some homemade corn tortillas and queso, wait an hour, eat the second 5 course meal of the day, and then to top of the night, we wait another hour and go out to one of the local taco stands and eat a half dozen tacos. Essentially, this his how Logan eats, and he can handle this type of routine. We affectionately call this routine "Bottlelajara" (His pops can't handle it. Generally, pops spend quite a bit of time sweating, trying to breath, lying flat on the cool tile floor and whimpering in his room, while trying to stave off the impending stroke).

Of course, all this eating leads to lots of this:
And more of this:

While in Boulder, Diane and I thought we'd treat Logan to his first real life experience. What better place in the world could we choose than the Pearl Street mall in Boulder??? We went there on friday afternoon, and boy...Logan was treated to something really special:
Logan was treated to his first Dijery-doo concert. The Dijery-doo players did not disappoint, as Logan fell asleep in no time (Imagine the sound of a little single engine Cesna airplane slowly droning through the air, then you've nailed what a Dijery-doo sounds like. Add in a slight pulsating beat, and you've got music-magic). Well, Diane and I certainly want Logan to play and master a few instruments, but we're not sold on him taking up the Dijery-doo. In all honesty, I don't see much of a financial future in it and it seems most people who play this instrument on the Pearl Street mall, in the middle of the afternoon while they could otherwise be working are dorks. Oh well.

I mentioned Rufus in the last post. For those of you who don't know, Rufus is our dog. Rufus doesn't know what to think of Logan, but I think we have a pretty good idea. The other day, Rufus decided to bolt and head for University Blvd and end it all. He generally feels ignored at this point. I think he and Logan will become good friends, but it will take some time.

Speaking of dogs, take a look at this pic below and note exactly what it is:
Just a piece of advise...if you take a shower at someone else's home, make sure the shampoo is for humans. Do not pick it up without looking and use it. You'll smell like clean dog all day.

Lastly, I have some shameless advertising to do. For all interested, please visit my website and buy your ink cartridges there!

Hello and welcome

Before I get going, I want to say that I ripped off the blog idea from my brother and sister-in-law. Now, I understand blogs are not a new idea, but it wouldn't have occurred to me to do this unless they hadn't. Fortunately, I've signed no royalty contracts with them. Ok, so let's talk about Logan.

There are a number of things to say about the boy. I guess we (Diane and I) were surprised at the difficulty of having this child in our house. He has very cruelly destroyed the life we knew, and hasn't cared a wit about it. In fact, he's had the audacity to come in here and demand that we feed him 8 times a day and act as an on-call poop-cleaning service. God forbid we don't jump when he's ready. That little man will squall like someone is pouring acid on his little weenie, until we do. Its amazing what that cry does to you. We have found him to be a bit of a petulant boy when it comes to putting him down for a nap. He tends to be a bit of a princess, wanting to be held, rocked, sung to, and paid to go to sleep. Its very bad for my lack of patience. The magic bullet for that (so far) is a ride in the car. He's as bad as Rufus. I have developed a nickname for our sweet little boy. Since he's erupts on both ends of his body (in squalls and poops), I've decided to call him Mt. Logan. In any case, he's very healthy and looking good. He has put on over 2 lbs and grown 2 inches since he was born.

Diane and I are battling tiredness, and Diane has had a real rough go of things since the birth, so it has been pretty tough. However, we've had an outpouring of help from many people...andrea, angie, dad, drew, frank jr, frank sr, jesse, joanne, kaycee, mom, rita, sandra, and so on. Sorry if I've missed someone. I'd like to especially thank Sandra, who has been a bountiful resource to us. For anyone else who wishes to help, send cash. we except bills in increments of $100.

Ok. On to the Pics.

Here's mom and baby. Mom had taken quite a beating during delivery, but she made a nice recovery. Logan was undoubtedly contemplating what he was going to eat for lunch. Likely formula. Mmmmmmmmmm.

Auntie Andrea holds Logan. He's happy about this.

Grandma Barb holds Logan. He's happy about this.

Auntie Sandra holds Logan. He's happy about this.

This is about as small as he'll ever be. With luck, he'll look as good when he's old as he does now. He'll have to lose the pacifier though. My brother made comment to me, that I would go into his nursery from day to day and very often, I'd look at him and see that he had changed and looked different. He was right. This little boy doesn't really look like he did 3 weeks ago. He has increased is body weight 33% and his height by 10%. Tiring.

Elder (and cuter) cousin Camille is making sure Logan is really all he says he is. Hopefully her appraisal is acceptable.

Logan is passed out in his Pop's lap.

Here's mom and Logan. He's got the arm action going. Hopefully it doesn't fall asleep on him. That would suck.

Apparently, no little boy likes to be clean...looks like ours is no different. You'd think the world had ended.

Logan is happy about something...probably the successful circumcision.

This is what I refer to as the "milk buzz" look. Here, Logan has just finished eating, he needs to be burped and he's breathing like a 600 lb man. Dude. Just eat slower.

Pops is a good burper. Mt. Logan intends on ruining a few shirts.

Either Logan is taking a huge dump, or he's just realized formula isn't the only thing one can eat.

Here's Logan in his "jail-bait" outfit. I think he was charged with disturbing the peace, and destruction of expensive diapers. All charges were dropped, as his lack of remorse made it impossible to rehab his poor decisions. The case may be opened later on.

This is Logan's, "chocolate auntie" (this term was originated by rita herself). Logan will need Auntie Rita's guidance as he grows up.

That's about it for now. Of course, we will be taking boatloads of pics and posting more. If you have any comments or questions, please feel free to drop a line on this blog.
